Buying a used Harley-Davidson Sportster 883

The entry point to Harley ownership for decades, sold as the 883 Standard, Hugger, Custom, SuperLow, Iron and more. They are simple and cheap to buy, but ages range from 1986 to 2022, so the frame type, fuel system and past modifications decide what you are really getting.

What to check on a Sportster 883

  • Identify the frame type: 2003 and older is solid-mount, 2004 and newer is rubber-mount.
  • On solid-mount bikes, look for loose bolts and cracked brackets from vibration.
  • Check for fresh oil around the rocker boxes, pushrod tubes and cylinder bases after the test ride.
  • Ask if it has been converted to 1200cc, and by whom.
  • Check the belt for cracks, missing teeth and rock damage.
  • On bikes with forward controls or lowered suspension, check for scrape marks under the footpegs and frame.
  • Check the small peanut tank for rust inside with a flashlight (look through the filler).

Safety recalls

Recalls are fixed free by a dealer, but only if someone took the bike in. Ask the seller for proof, or have a dealer check the VIN. You can also check a VIN yourself at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

Fix: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE AIR CLEANER FILTER ON THE AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES. IF OWNERS HAVE PURCHASED A FILTER AND HAVE NOT INSTALLED IT ON THEIR MOTORCYCLES, THEY CAN RETURN THE FILTER FOR A REPLACEMENT OR A REFUND OF THEIR MONEY.

Is it a good first bike?

Low seat and manageable power, but heavier than most beginner bikes (around 550 lb) with limited cornering clearance. Fine for a new rider who wants a cruiser and takes it easy.

Solid-mount Evolution

1986 to 2003

Engine bolted directly to the frame, so more vibration. Carbureted. 4-speed until 1991, 5-speed from then on.

Rubber-mount, carbureted

2004 to 2006

New frame with a rubber-mounted engine, which is much smoother. Still carbureted.

Rubber-mount, fuel injected

2007 to 2022

Electronic fuel injection. ABS became available in later years. Iron 883 arrived in 2009.
